Ocean Magic: Making waves with Apron
Surfboard craft powered by smart financial teamwork

We had a chat with Dexter Lawrence, founder of DL Accounts about how he works with Ocean Magic and how with the help of Apron, Ocean Magic can focus on what they love doing most — making wicked surfboards. Harry from the Ocean Magic team also joined the conversation to give some context on how Apron helps him keep things in shape; payments and of course, the boards in their factory.

Surf first, paperwork second
Ocean Magic is a storied surfboard factory in Newquay, Cornwall, founded in 1973 and working with suppliers and surfers the world over. When we spoke, Dexter was down in the factory, just a 20-minute drive from Fistral Beach. He’s built a close relationship with their team, has a strong grasp of the business’s goals, and, in his own words, knows “how best to help out surfers, who aren’t the best at paperwork but are experts with customers and in their craft.”

Less admin, more surfboards
DL Accounts handles as much as it can for clients using Apron; in the case of Ocean Magic, Dexter says: “We use it for everything — supplier payments, payroll and the photo capture of invoices and receipts.”
Harry adds that the process of easily capturing invoices on his phone has hugely helped him stay on track of things: “we know that once you’ve taken the picture of it and it’s over to Dexter in Apron, it’s stored and then it’s back to building for us; speaking with customers and making quality surf boards.”

Making the time for what counts
Ocean Magic’s setup is designed to ensure everything runs smoothly and allows Dexter to focus on steering and supporting the business in its next steps.
“We don’t want to spend time filling out paperwork — everything being up to speed via Apron means I can focus on other things when I’m down in the factory. I can only do this because everything is in check and digitised up front on Apron.”

There’s a powerful sense of community around surfing and both Harry and Dexter attest to Ocean Magic having strong ties to their people; both customers or suppliers. “When the guys aren’t making boards, they’re speaking with customers which makes this work a joy,” says Harry.
With the help of Apron, DL Accounts is working to ensure the Ocean Magic team, their suppliers and customers are at ease, in the water and in the factory.
